As the helicopter took off from the rig’s helipad, Sadie called through for the Coast Guard at Prudhoe Bay, asking for him to track details of any vessel that had reached port that day. As she ended the call, she looked around at the quartet inside the chopper.

The news of a possible second vessel involved in the killings had reinvigorated them, and even O’Hara seemed less bothered by his airsickness than at any other point over the last two days. They eagerly shared information on the questioning of the crew members, although Harding and Sheehan had even less to report.

“Well, we have a list of crew members who we particularly want to check for priors, including Mr. Miller,” Harding said, reviewing her notes and adding the information that Sadie had given her. “He’s the only one who admitted to knowing Summers on anything approaching a personal level, so he’s certainly worthy of further consideration. Although I doubt a derrick hand is involved, especially now that we have the possibility of a second boat. Good work, Agents.”

She said the last as though she was praising children, Sadie thought, but for once she let it slide. She was getting used to Harding and was just glad that she wasn’t Sheehan and didn’t have to work with her daily.

“That’s if the second vessel has anything to do with this,” Sadie said, urging caution even though she was excited herself about this latest lead. “But it seems like too much of a coincidence to not be related. The Coast Guard should be able to tell us more.”

O’Hara was looking thoughtful. “The way McMahon told us though,” he said slowly, “it seemed odd, don’t you think? You already asked him if he had seen anything else. I didn’t buy the way it just suddenly occurred to him.”

“Me neither,” Sadie agreed, impressed with O’Hara’s assessment of McMahon, “but he seemed to have a bit of a flair for the theatrical. He might have just wanted to seem important. It isn’t that unusual, is it, a boat on the waters? But the way he told us; he had obviously been thinking about what it might mean.”

Harding was listening to her intently. “Or perhaps he wasn’t sure if he wanted to tell us,” she said.

“Maybe he knew damn well who it was and was just messing us about,” Sheehan growled. Sadie was getting the impression that the gruff Northerner had well and truly had enough and just wanted to go home. “He’s probably involved as well,” he added cynically. “That’s why we’re getting nowhere. They’re all covering up for each other.”

Harding glanced at him. “There’s no need for conspiracy theories, Inspector,” she sniffed. Sheehan raised a bushy eyebrow at her.

“This is a man’s world out here ma’am,” he said bluntly. “With respect, not an area you’d know about. They will all cover for each other, mark my words.”

Harding looked as though she wanted to slap Sheehan for his comment and Sadie looked away discreetly, staring out of the window.
